Refreshing the CC guidance on risk 🤝

Why are we still using tools that aren’t fit for our sector?

We’re pleased to announce that The Risk Collaborative is working with the Charity Finance Group to support a full refresh of the Charity Commission’s CC26 risk guidance—last updated in 2010. Together, we’ll reach out to the wider charity sector to gather information from stakeholders, aiming to produce practical, proportionate guidance written in plain language that trustees and leadership teams can use in day-to-day decision-making.

Why this matters: charities now face new realities—cyber threats, rapid regulatory change, safeguarding complexities and funding volatility—that the old guidance does not fully address. Our approach centres on listening: we’ll be running surveys, holding regional workshops, and convening interviews with trustees, senior managers, frontline staff, funders, and specialist advisors to surface real-world problems and workable solutions.

What we’ll deliver: recommendations to the Charity Commission so they can develop a refreshed CC26 that links risk to organisational objectives, offers simple tools and templates (not exhaustive checklists), and reflects proportionate practice for organisations of different sizes and contexts. Where possible, we’ll provide information about pilots with charities linked to draft recommendations to ensure the guidance is clear, usable, and culturally relevant across the UK.

If you’d like to be involved—by joining a workshop, completing the survey, or hosting a local roundtable—please get in touch at contact@theriskcollaborative.org. We look forward to building guidance that strengthens charity governance and helps the sector manage risk confidently and transparently.
